Holy Monastery of the Pampered Archangels<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the northwest of Xanthi, 150 meters above sea level, in the forest, is the monastery of the Pammegiston Taxiarches, just below the Byzantine acropolis of the city.<\/p>

No records have been preserved to know when it was created, but from the frescoes that have survived we assume that it was built after 1500. It went through great destruction from earthquakes and wars, was rebuilt after 1.941 and today houses the ecclesiastical school.<\/p>

Today the monastery is a men's monastery and celebrates the feast of Archangels Michael and Gabriel on November 8.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the northeast of Xanthi, at 160 meters above the village of Samakov, is the monastery of Panagia Archangeliotissa.<\/p>

We do not know the date of its creation as no records have been preserved. It suffered great destruction from earthquakes and wars and was rebuilt in 1.841 by the Bishop of Xanthi Eugene. It is worth noting that the monastery was restored in 1.954 by Metropolitan Anthony of Xanthi and is a support for both Christians and Muslims.<\/p>

Today the monastery is male and celebrates on 21 November the Entrance of the Virgin Mary and on 15 August the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.<\/p>

Also, in the Holy Monastery of Panagia Archangeliotissa is the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Xanthi and was established in 1960 by Metropolitan Anthony of Xanthi. The ecclesiastical exhibits found in the site date from the end of the Byzantine period with many of them having been stolen by the Bulgarians during the Bulgarian occupation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the north of Xanthi on a rock in the mountainous Rhodope, at an altitude of 170 meters, is the monastery of Panagia Kalamos. The monastery was built in 726 to 843 AD (Iconoclastic period) by iconoclastic friends. The name of the monastery comes from the icon of the Virgin Mary which was found in the reeds. Today the monastery is a women's monastery and celebrates the Nine Days of the Virgin Mary on 23 August.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Holy Monastery of Agia Irini<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the northeast of Xanthi on a hill is the monastery of Agia Irini. It was built in 1972 by Archimandrite Antonios (Dalatsis) and Metropolitan Antonios (Klaoudatos) of Xanthi. The monastery has been operating since 1978 as an ecclesiastical orphanage for girls and has so far raised and rehabilitated 35 girls. Today the monastery is a women's monastery, hosts many holy relics and celebrates the feast of St. Irene the Great Martyr on May 5.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
